Trek in Iceland
the gateway to the Center of the Earth
Iceland, a land of fire and ice, was our destination for this 4th T1D Challenge.
This year we were 12 type1 diabetics from 10 countries: France, Germany, Spain, Italy, England, Norway, Isarel, USA, South Africa and Brazil.
10 young adults aged 17 to 25 years + 2 mentors: Delphine (France) and Peter (US), having already participated in previous T1D Challenge.
The team was accompanied, as every year by a medical staff being part of the network Sweet : Dr Olga Kordonouri (Germany), Dr Natasa Bratina (Slovenia), Dr. Mauro Scharf (Brazil) and Dr. Valentino Cherubini (Italy), and Martina (Germany) our nurse.
We did a 5-day trek in the south of Iceland in the volcano Hekla field, one of the most active volcanoes in the country. Everday: long hours of walking in the lava fields swept by the wind. That looked like the Moon, far away from our Earth. We felt tiny in this vast mineral landscape. Sometimes in the midst of the chaos of stones: green meadows, lava flows covered in silvery lichens and green moss, bubbling geysers, sulphurous fumaroles and rivers of ice water (tested for you!). We can feel our Earth living !
In total 100 kilometers traveled, and nearly 3000m of positive elevation changes (the same downhill!).
Some of us were wearing insulin pump, and other were under multiple daily injections, but all of us were using a sensor - CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring), which was very useful to anticipate hypos and hypers and better manage our diabetes. Every evening, we took a time of reflection to better undertsand our daily blood sugars to improve our diabetes management for the day after.
From each experience we learn. The T1D Challenge program inspires the T1D community throughout the world, while accompaning each member to know themselves better, to take the time to understand his body and diabetes. From this knowledge, we are more than FREE.
Another beautiful T1D Challenge where the team spirit was amazing and powerful. We made it as a team. Together we are stronger!
