Trek in the Samaria Gorge
For the 3rd Challenge T1D we embarked on the adventure of young diabetes type1. The end of adolescence and entry into adult life can be complicated; but they can be even with diabetes in his luggage. Hence the "T1D Youth Challenge": the Youth Challenge T1D.
11 young diabetes type1, from 11 different countries: France, Portugal, Sweden, Slovenia, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Greece, Canada, Brazil, India. All were recruited via the centers Sweet, centers for children and adolescents throughout the world who are working on improving the management of daily diabetes. Two type1 mentors Peter (USA) who participated to T1D Challenge Machu Picchu in Peru and Delphine, WDT founder and T1DC leader. Four renowned physicians were there: Dr. Olga Kordonouri (Germany), Dr Diana Vazeou (Greece), Dr Mauro Scharf (Brazil) and Dr. Tadej Battelino and Martina (Germany) our diabetes nurse.
The T1D Challenge was held in Crete. 4 days of intense trek under the blazing sun. 6 hours of walking per day on the banks of the Libyan Sea the first 2 days, then rise Samaria Gorge (+ 1300m of vertical gain) on the 3rd day, before tackling the ascent of Mt Gingilos (elevation gain of 1300 and the same downhill!).
A superb sports & human adventure full of positive emotions !! Young people who have shown great team spirit and that despite the difficult conditions of the terrain manage their diabetes as Heads !!! A very nice and positive message of hope for us all!
The film T1D Youth Challenge, as every year, was presented at national and international diabetes congresses (EASD - Stockholm, Sweden in September 2015, ISPAD - Brisbane, Australia in October 2015, World Diabetes Congress - Vancouver, Canada in December 2015).
