TREK IN THE SIERRA NEVADA, CALIFORNIA - USA
For our 5th T1D Challenge, we headed for the United States and its Sierra Nevada for 5 days of trek with the climb of Mt Langley and its 4300m.
As with every year, the T1D Challenge brought together an international team of 14 Type 1 diabetics (DT1) : 12 "young" 16-20 year olds, and 2 "older" with multiple trekking experiences, USA and Delphine - France ).
Four internationally renowned doctors as well as two cameramen have completed this unique team.
Our Trek in the Sierra Nevada
We arrived from all around the world in Las Vegas, before going throught the famous Valley of the Dead to Lone Pine, our "base camp".
On the program: several hours of walking per day through the splendid landscapes of the Sequoia National Park .
Our days : we hike, we eat, we treat our low blood sugar, we set up our camp, and we talk and share our Life with laughter.
Ascension of Mount Langley - 4300m
4th day of our trek: today, we start the ascent of Mount Langley and its 4300m. After 3 days at over 3000m our bodies are accustomed to altitude. For most of the team it's a first time.
4am in the morning, headlight on, we are ready to go . Some of us have a quick breakfats, others do not. We are all equipped with a DexcomG5 glucose sensor, which helps us to control our blood sugar by anticipating hypo and hyper.
The first two hours are in a dark night; just a few stars twinkle. At the New Army Pass a light, but intense, red line shows up. Very quickly, the landscape around us is revealed, still a few patches of snow to remind us that we are more than 4000m. The time to celebrate our first victory, to have a look at the summit of Mount Langley and we go !
It is barely 8am when we proudly flaunt our flags. The team does manage well its diabetes ... and no mountain sickness to report!
14 happy Type1 trekkers from alla round the world on one of the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Happiness is not a destination. it is a way of Life !
